SanDisk Professional Becomes G-DRIVE: What's Changing (and What's Not)

If you're currently shopping for a professional hard drive or have recently received a product labeled SanDisk Professional or G-DRIVE, you may be wondering why both brands seem to coexist. Rest assured: they are essentially the same product.

A Look Back at the SanDisk and Western Digital Separation

In February 2025, SanDisk and Western Digital officially separated their businesses and product portfolios.

As part of this reorganization:

• Western Digital retained its hard drive (HDD) product lines.
• SanDisk retained its flash memory and SSD product lines.

However, this transition created a unique situation for the SanDisk Professional product family, often referred to as SanDisk Pro.

While SanDisk Professional products were primarily professional hard drives and storage solutions, they continued to carry the SanDisk name even though the product category now belonged to Western Digital.

To clarify its product offering and eliminate this confusion, Western Digital gradually replaced the SanDisk Professional brand with G-DRIVE.

G-DRIVE: A New Look for the Same Product

The good news is that this change is primarily about branding.

G-DRIVE products are the same as the former SanDisk Professional products:

• Same product SKU
• Same UPC code
• Same internal components
• Same build quality
• Same performance
• Same manufacturer warranty

The most noticeable difference is the replacement of the SanDisk Professional logo with the G-DRIVE logo on both the packaging and the product itself.

The Transition Is Nearly Complete

Over the past several months, both versions have coexisted throughout the distribution channel.

Depending on inventory availability at the manufacturer or distributor level, customers could receive either a product labeled SanDisk Professional or one labeled G-DRIVE.

At this point, inventory packaged under the SanDisk Professional brand is nearly depleted.

Most newly shipped units are now branded G-DRIVE, which has become the new identity for Western Digital's professional storage solutions.

What's Next?

Western Digital is currently working on the next evolution of its G-DRIVE product family. Several new products and concepts were showcased at NAB Show 2026 in Las Vegas this past April. Based on the latest information available, this new generation of G-DRIVE solutions is expected to launch during the first quarter of 2027.

In the meantime, price increases are still expected on several models, particularly capacities of 22TB and above (including G-RAID Shuttle systems), as well as the 6TB and 12TB G-DRIVE models.
